Gallatin Canyon House

A single-level house with a walk-out lower floor, on a wooded lot above the river. The owners wanted it to feel like it had always been there: a cut sandstone base, dark-stained cedar above it and a pegged Douglas fir truss over the front door, cut in our shop and raised in a day.

The back opens onto a long deck and a stone patio, with the main rooms in a row of tall windows facing the water.

Hyalite A-Frame

An architect's A-frame on a steep lot in the pines south of town. Standing-seam steel runs from the ridge almost to the ground, so the snow slides clear of the decks. Inside it's clear spruce on the ceilings, polished concrete with radiant heat underfoot, and a loft over the kitchen.

The full-height glass gable needed a hidden steel ridge beam. We set it with a crane in one October morning, ahead of the first snow.

03 · Gallatin Gateway · 2023

Gateway Pines House

A flat-roofed house in an old stand of pines on the valley floor, drawn by the owners' architect. Thin brick and dark panels over a steel and wood frame, with long strip windows set to miss the trunks.

Behind it we built a timber garden house: exposed trusses, a stone fireplace, a sauna and a small plunge pool, all looking back across the lawn.
